Today my post is to show & tell about some photos of my girls and one of their friends, learning to sew using Oly*Fun! This semester I wanted to teach a few little girls how to sew. I had decided our first sewing class needed to be quick, simple and inexpensive. I also want the girls to create a useful project at each class. My thinking was if they make a super simple, reusable shopping bag they could use it for each class from here on out to tote their sewing projects and notions along with them to class.
I know I had mentioned earlier that I have just started working with the company Fairfield in July. You probably know of Fairfield as the creators of Poly-Fil and if you are anything like me, you probably have NO IDEA just how many more amazing products this company creates. One of the newest is a really nifty material cally Oly*Fun. It's a great light weight material that is water resistant, non fray and comes in host of fun colors.
I first let the girls choose their favorite colors. Each one picked a different color.
We cut our material and started pinning the sides. As you can see Emi (7 years old) is doing it all on her own!
We then started sewing up the sides. See the blue tape? It's painter's tape that I added to the sewing machine to give the girls a larger and more visible guide line to aim for while they were sewing. My friend Amy came up with the idea for a longer guide line as we were working and I thought that the painter's tape would be the perfect material to use!
Once the sides were sewn up it was time to mark our corners to create the perfect box corners on our bags.
Once we sewed our box corners it was time to turn it right side out, hem the top down and add our handles! For time's sake we chose to use ribbon for the handles, but we could certainly have made our handles out of Oly*Fun.
Seriously, do you see this happy face??? She was SO PROUD of herself and her very first sewing project....and I gotta admit, I think my smile was just as big and my heart was BURSTING with pride.
And here's the crew! They were all so thrilled with themselves! I was just as proud! Who wouldn't be??
I can't recall if I had shared with link to Coleton being featured on their blog for his Oly*Fun Sailboat creation. Well anyway...there's the link in case you'd like to see it! :) Also, here's a link to all of the fun Oly*Fun Projects that all of the other Master Makers have come up with so far! Enjoy!
