I really should just chalk this blog up to be a reality check into how a homeschooler's life can really infiltrate every other area of life! LOL!!!
Here I am, a super crafty mom who loves creating and yet it seems I am more often working on "secret projects" that I can't share or on "kid stuff" now a days!
Well today, I have some kid stuff for you! My kids and I are working our way through our science book all about swimming creatures and I have put off the "ocean box project" because I had the perfect idea of how it would look but needed the right materials.... WELCOME OLY*FUN!! Well once I realized that Oly*fun was going to be perfect to both cover and line the box, we were in business.
First - one must gather the necessary supplies as well as the needed workmen! Having a group of cute kids helps with ANY crafty project. ;)
But seriously - here's a look at what we chose to use for our box.
Lily Kate decided on the colors of Oly*fun we would use. To her they looked like the ocean. I decided (being the glue gun guru that I am now - wink wink) that the use of a low temp hot glue would be best. The Oly*fun material is heat sensitive (I ironed it once on too high of a heat and burned a hole in it...whooops!) - anyway I thought that low temp glue would also be a tad safer for all the little fingers involved in the projected process. In addition to the hot glue and Oly*fun I also grabbed some nice sharp scissors from Westcott, some sand and an assortment of rocks and shells we gathered on our last trip to the beach.
I let Elliott & Coleton go at it on their own. I figure they are now 12 & 10 and should be able to handle a bit of wrapping and gluing! :) (Plus It's nice to be able to step back and get a break somedays ;) )
I let the girls help me with lining the inside of the box. We wanted to make it "not perfectly flat" so that it best mimicked the ocean floor. And then it was back to the boys! They painted the bottom with a bit of watered down school glue and then covered it with sand.
Our final addition was a few rocks. We hot glued them to the bottom. Now as we move forward we will begin to fill the box with all sorts of oceanic creatures as we learn about them. So don't worry - this is not "done" just "done for now". And I promise to keep you in the loop on what we add - and upload a few photos along the way!
Now, I must get off of here and get to making a few little girls some dress up crowns....a special request has been made!!! :D Enjoy your day!
