Hi There All! Well - I have a fun & cute project to share with you today, my Cuddle Cake Mug Hug Tutorial. Using Shannon Fabrics Cuddle Cakes, Fairfield's new interlining "Solarize" and a few notions, I have created a mug hug, and my littlest - Lily Kate, LOVES IT. (I promise, I make things for my bigger kids - LK just has gotten most of the recent projects for some reason! LOL)
THERE IS A GIVEAWAY GOING OVER AT THE FAIRFIELD BLOG - MAKE SURE YOU GO THERE AND LEAVE A COMMENT TOO!!!!
Now, before we begin I have a confession. First - this is not my planned project for this challenge... and in all truth, I may not get to the original one and have it photographed and on the blog by tomorrow! Long story - I will not bore you with it - but let's just say life has a way of intercepting our best laid plans! :)
Second, if we are going to be totally honest - this is a cute final project, right? But let me tell you - it's not what I had pictured! Lily Kate has been asking me to make her something that would keep her little finger tips from being burned while she drinks her hot cocoa...instantly I thought of this sweet project. Then, then she picked her colors. I thought - FUN a purple mug hug with a bright yellow heart....no - she wanted it to be YELLOW with a purple heart! Ah well, it is done to her specs and she thinks it's perfect.
So without further ado, let's get right into how you can make your own!
First you will need to measure the mug you plan to make your mug hug for. Our mug is a small mug so it's not going to work for most normal sized mugs. Make the length of your Cuddle fabric and Solarize the diameter of your mug. Once you are done sewing it should be about a half inch short which is perfect for just slipping your elastic through the handle. Cut one piece of Solarize, and two of Cuddle. Here you can see I decided to applique the heart onto just one strip. If you are going to applique, now's the time to do it!
***NOTE - I used a Spellbinders Classic Heart Die to cut my cute little heart. The Cuddle Fabric cut very well using the Spellbinders Dies. I simply layered a piece of paper onto the cutting pad, placed the Cuddle Fabric then the die onto and ran it through the machine twice to be sure all threads cut cleanly!***
Stitch a small loop of elastic to the front of the appliqued panel, make sure the loop points away from your raw edge.
***I colored my elastic using a Sharpie marker to make it match. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS. We have had issues with the ink bleeding onto the beautiful yellow Cuddle :( A white bit of elastic would not have been a problem - believe me....***
Layer your pieces like this - Back panel face up, Front panel face down, then Solarize. Stitch all the way around the edges leaving a 1.5" opening to turn it right side out through. Turn the project right side out and stitch the opening closed using a ladder stitch.
Stitch the button onto the end opposite the elastic loop and you are all done!
Feed the elastic through the mug handle and over the button to hold the mug hug in place.
Ahhh a "Cuddley" perfect fit!
